THE ILLUMINATED PAGE 2004

City of Santa Clara Central Library, Santa Clara, CA

16’ H x 16’ W x 200’ L

Fabricated metal, light.

An entry sequence of five sculptural arches, composed along a 200’ arced walkway through which pedestrians approach the building, conveys a welcoming entrance at the City of Santa Clara Central Library.  The semi-transparent, silvery forms invite the view of sky and trees to be intertwined with the sculpture.  At night the curved arches are lit from within producing a soft glow designed to enhance this sculptural environment at night.  “The Illuminated Page,” is inspired by the delicate motion created by turning a page, and references the transparent, glowing quality of illuminated manuscripts.  Inside of each gently curved arch is a world of cast aluminum floating objects symbolizing the acquisition and dispersal of information.
