The amphitheater is designed for public events and private reflection. Quotes by Dr. King on the pillars punctuate the top level of the amphitheater.  A spiral walkway of thirty-nine and one third stones represents the years of Dr. King's life.  A quote from Dr. King's last speech, "I See the Promised Land," is etched into a smaller stone at the entrance to the Memorial’s spiral path.
