Five gateway sculptures along the bridge, 16’ x 14’ each
Spanning the Gila River along Estrella Parkway in Goodyear, Grygutis is creating a series of five stainless steel gateway sculptures that fuse sculpture and infrastructure. Developed in close collaboration with engineers from Kimley-Horn, each form leaps across the divided roadway, holding a 12-foot aperture to the river landscape below.
The sweeping arcs evoke wind filled sails. Their surfaces carry patterns abstracted from native riparian flora. The pattern evokes the life of the river in rhythm and form. By day the sculptures gather and reflect the desert light, while by night, they glow in saturated blue, a luminous reminder of water’s essential presence.
Composed to be read in motion, the gateways unfold differently at every pace. Motorists experience a cadence of forms that rise and release in quick succession, while pedestrians and cyclists encounter shifting shadow, detail, and texture at a human scale. The result is a landmark that resonates across speeds, inviting awareness, passage, and connection.
