Located in the shadow of the Santa Catalina Mountains at the beautiful JCC, the Garden of Hope draws on the Jewish concept of intentionality and welcomes all to its contemplative oasis. Whether you seek a healing respite, spiritual reconnection, or a peaceful space to unplug from the bustle of daily life, the Garden of Hope’s profoundly sensory environment will provide a retreat for introspection and reflection.
Designed by Barbara Grygutis and Randy Emerson for multi-generational use, the Garden of Hope is equally suited for individual meditation or story-telling with children and welcomes all community members. During daylight hours, shade and unique benches will make the Garden a haven in all seasons, while after sunset, distinctive lighting will provide an illuminating experience for visitors.
Entering through the gateway from the existing JCC Sculpture Garden, you notice that the Garden of Hope’s design contrasts with and complements the existing architecture of the JCC. The entrance to the Garden is framed by laser-cut aluminum in a pattern inspired by the skeleton of the sabra plant—known locally as prickly pear cactus—found throughout Israel and the desert Southwest.
A meandering wall of polished stone embraces the Garden of Hope. Sun streams through aluminum accents and glass blocks while small openings in the wall invite passers-by to consider a visit. A glass block menorah embodies the idea of hope by calling to mind the eternal flame and the enduring spirit of the Jewish people.
Two paths define the green belt that runs through the Garden of Hope, which flourishes with flowering plants native to the Sonoran Desert. Mature trees, desert landscaping, and shade canopies invite year-round use. Two bubbling stone fountains enhance relaxation with gentle sounds and soothing flow. In keeping with the spirit of the Garden, sculptural pieces will inspire harmony, rest, and spiritual exploration.
Whether seeking resiliency, calm, a sense of well-being, healing from illness or trauma, or simply an opportunity to read or relax, visitors will be embraced by hope.
