Socrates Sculpture Park’s 1994–95 exhibition brought together an international group of artists in a newly formalized public arts space along the East River in Long Island City, Queens. Organized shortly after the park became part of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the exhibition reflected the site’s transformation from an abandoned landfill into a vibrant, artist-built environment shaped by community, experimentation, and large-scale outdoor work. Barbara Grygutis was among the invited artists contributing to this dynamic field of sculpture, where works engaged the open landscape, shifting light, and urban context, embodying the park’s spirit of creative possibility and collective making.
American Dream is the continuation of a journey to explore and revere the familiar objects of desire which occupy our daily lives.
